Kuura beneath the northern lights in a snow-covered yard

68.69485° N · 27.46408° E

Winter at Kuura.

When the dark becomes part of the house.

Winter gathers around Kuura in low blue light, with snow taking the sound from the yard and darkness opening the sky above the fells near Ivalo. You take the house whole, returning from privately arranged days to warm windows, a firelit lounge, breakfast and dinner, and a separate sauna building held within the same boundary. The season changes the pace without changing the privacy: every room, corridor and key remains with your party.

Days here are shaped by the conditions.

What to expect

The house remains constant while the conditions change.

  • The whole house and its sauna building close to other guests.
  • Breakfast and dinner return you to the same private table each day.
  • One named concierge holds the winter plan from arrival to departure.
  • Sami-led guides arrange private days on working land beyond tourist programmes.
  • Every driver, chef, guide and housekeeper signs a discretion agreement.

Best times

Read winter by darkness, snow and returning light.

3 December to 9 January

The polar night

At Ivalo the sun does not clear the horizon at all. It is not black: the sun sits just below the rim and the middle of the day carries several hours of low blue light.

The aurora window

Aurora watching needs a dark sky. The northern lights remain weather, not a schedule.

late March or early April, lasting to mid-May

The turn toward light

The snow surface freezes hard overnight and carries weight in the morning. It is the fastest, longest-travelling snow of the year, and the light has come back.

How we work

Private Nordic is part of Xwander Nordic. We do not own the houses, the aircraft or the vehicles we arrange, and we do not own land in Lapland. We hold the relationships, we make the arrangements, and we stand behind them — but each supplier's own terms apply to their part of the trip, and we will tell you whose terms govern what before you commit to anything.
